The best thing about being part of a international organisation is that you get to meet and learn from other people and cultures all the time ✨🎉

This week has been absolutely wonderful as we were welcomed at the @maailmanvaihto camp in Finland! 🇫🇮

This was made possible through the EU funded collaboration between @danskicye and ICYE Finland - and because Milie from the ICYE UK board lives in Denmark, it was possible for her to go as well, which we are incredibly thankful for ☺️

We will be taking many great learnings with us from this camp exchange and hope to implement many great initiatives from both the Danish and the Finish camp. Because nothing is ever perfect and we can always learn and improve 😉

What does it mean to be an organisation that stands up for peace?

Our federation was founded back in 1949 to try and build bridges between the US and Europe after WW2. The original purpose was to learn from each other and about each other, because the unknown is always scarier and easier to misunderstand than what is known.

For ICYE, this means furthering mutual understanding between people of all ethnicities and identities, and it means to be inclusive of all people as well. No matter where you’re from in the world, regardless of colour or religion, being trans or cis, gay or straight or anything in between; ICYE aims to foster a place for understanding and growth.

It is important for us to say this in this current climate, and note that we support EVERYONE and their right to be who they are ☺️🎉

Did you know our camps ROCK? We may not have the Jonas Brothers, but we still dance, play games and sing our heart out to songs in languages that we don't speak 😩🎶

The camps are your first stop before your adventures truly start - whether you're traveling abroad with us or volunteering in the UK, camp is where it all starts. Here, our staff and camp volunteers arrange sessions to make sure you are well prepared for your work, cultural differences, and whatever struggles you might face. And of course, you get to meet all the other volunteers who are starting the journey alongside you.

All long-term ICYE programmes include camps; typically an arrival camp, a midterm camp and an end of year camp. Fair warning: the final camp is usually quite emotional 🩵💙

The camps are there for practical reasons, but also to remind volunteers that they are never alone. There are always other volunteers going through the same things.

Happy April 1st! You might be expecting us to prank you with an announcement that ICYE just discovered the country of Genovia, and have been invited to send volunteers to the royal court 🤔 (all hail Anne Hathaway) ➡️

But no, instead, we want to introduce you to the French day of fish 🤗🐟

For Poisson d'Avril, a fish is a sign of affection, whether you receive it as a prank or as an absurd postcard 🐡💌

❓Why the fish❓
One explanation goes that back in 1564, king Charles IX changed the start of the year from April 1st to January 1st, messing with people's routine. They continued to exchange "boxing day" gifts on April 1st, but over time, the gifts became mock presents, often in the form of food.
The fish seemingly came into the picture due to April being within the period of lent; a time where the consumption of meat was forbidden while fish was permitted, leading to these food themed presents often containing fish.
This then evolved from real fish to fish-shaped food, fish toys, fish postcards and finally, cheeky paper fish on people's backs.

This is the most popular explanation we have found, though some speak about ancient Roman traditions, some relate the Christian symbol of the fish to the tradition, and yet another group relates the celebration to the beginning of the fishing season in France.

Whatever the reason, we hope you receive and give many fish today 💙🐟💙🐟

International Women's Day is a great time to highlight the unsung work that especially women and girls often do; so-called invisible labour.

Invisible labour is the kind of work (especially in the home) that takes skill, effort and time, yet somehow still isn't considered proper "work".

Unfortunately, it isn't just at home that women experience this burden: tasks like event planning, team-building exercises, maintaining relationships, and building community all fall to women in mixed-gendered workplaces. Here, women provide the majority of the "office housework", which are tasks associated with low promotability.

Although all of these largely social tasks are essential to creating a healthy workplace, a 2022 study from the New York University Abu Dhabi showed that it can directly keep women out of leadership roles. While the workforce thrives, the women who worked hard to create that community are drained for time and resources, making it hard for them to legitimise their power.

This should not be the case. Here at ICYE UK, we believe that all unpaid work should be shared and voluntary, and most importantly, acknowledged. It should be a catalyst for growth, not something that prevents people from growing.

Empathy and compassion are not gendered, and research has shown that there is no categorical difference between the male and female brain, so let's be better at sharing the burden!

For ALL women and girls, so they have space and time to grow and learn.

Two weeks ago, Anna (our first outgoing volunteer of the season 🥳) set off for her one-year placement at Cholmondeley Children’s Centre in New Zealand. This is what she told us at her pre-departure seminar:

“I’ve decided to volunteer abroad with children because I am passionate about making a positive impact on young lives and experiencing different cultures. Working with children allows me to contribute to their growth and development while learning from their unique perspectives and boundless energy.
As I prepare to start this journey, I feel a mix of excitement and anticipation. I’m eager to form meaningful connections, immerse myself in a new community, and face the rewarding challenges that come with this experience.”

Hey guys :) here’s another one: I’m Isi, I’m 18 years old and I’m from Germany. My project is Match and Mentor, and it’s located in Norfolk. We work with adults with learning disabilities and do lots of different things, including gardening, arts and crafts or volunteering in a charity shop. I decided to volunteer with ICYE to get to know the culture and people of a different country, and to learn things about the work and myself. I also chose the UK to improve my language skills. It is difficult to say what I enjoyed most since coming here, but I really enjoy working in my project and spending time with the people I work with. I also really enjoyed meeting the other volunteers from all over the world. I have enjoyed my time here so much, and I cannot recommend volunteering with ICYE enough!

Hi! I’m Linda, 19 years old and I’m volunteering at the Catholic Worker Farm, a shelter near Rickmansworth for homeless women where we take care of them and maintain the farm. Whether there’s something that needs to be prepared or a room that needs renovation, we do it!

I started volunteering with ICYE because I wanted to spend a year abroad for years and the UK has always been a place I wanted to get to know better so to me it’s like a dream come true. Besides, before getting into University and being busy studying, what can be nicer than going abroad, helping vulnerable people and doing some practical work? :)

Coming here was one of, if not, the best decision I’ve ever made, nothing before in my life compares to the experiences I gained here. I live in a community of many lovely people, gained quite a few skills that are useful in so many everyday situations and I feel like I already became a much better and more mature version of myself than when I first arrived in England.

For another 5 amazing months to come :D

Hi! My name is Hanna, I’m 20 years old and I’m from Germany.
I’m volunteering at William Blake House which is a care home for people with disabilities and I’m supporting the residents in their home with personal care, activities throughout the day and their needs in their daily lives.

The reason for my volunteering with ICYE is that I wanted to gain more experiences in working with people with disabilities and to get to know the English culture as well as improving my English skills and meeting a lot of new friends.

Thanks to ICYE I’m not only able to build up a life for this year in the UK and be active in social work, I also gained new friendships for life with people from all over the world.

Toka went to 🇪🇨 Ecuador🇪🇨 for six months in 2012 with our volunteer sending programme, and has stayed involved with ICYE UK in different ways ever since. We asked her to tell us about her experience:

“After leaving university, I was interested in working in the charity sector, but wasn’t sure what exactly I wanted to do. Volunteering abroad just seemed like a great way to support a non-profit organisation, get some insight into the general field I was interested in, and experience some much needed excitement and freedom after years of formal education. I’ve always loved travelling and been interested in cultures and languages, so the whole idea was essentially a win win for me.”

“Just as I’d hoped, volunteering as an intern in the ICYE office in Quito really allowed me to gain an understanding of the day-to-day workings of a small international NGO. What ended up impacting me even more though, was being away from my usual support network and living and working with a whole new group of people, mostly speaking a different language. It really challenged me to come out of my shell in a way I’d never had to before.“

“In the end, the best part of the whole experience was the close friendships I was able to build with my host family and my fellow international volunteers by rising to that challenge. And of course, having Ecuador’s mind-blowing nature and scenery as a backdrop to all of this didn’t hurt either!”

Here’s a little #tbt to our cultural cooking nights at the on-arrival camps. We encourage our volunteers to share their favourite meals from their home countries and give everyone a taste of their culture. This isn’t just a great way to enjoy a wide range of new dishes and flavours but also the perfect opportunity for the volunteers to get to know each other whilst they prepare their multicultural dinner. Sharing these dishes is a great way to start of your journey of intercultural exchange.

Milie from Denmark volunteered in 🇰🇷South Korea🇰🇷 between 2017-2018 and has stayed involved with ICYE since, most recently helping out at one of our ICYE UK volunteer training camps. We asked her to tell us about her year abroad.

“When I was finishing up my last year of high school, I knew I didn't want to go to university right away. I wanted to live a little first, experience things and have my own life before going back into the education system. A bit of freedom, preferably as far away from Denmark as possible. So, volunteering seemed like the perfect plan; a chance to go abroad, get to know people and do some good in a community.”

“I worked at Mangu Youth Centre in Seoul, South Korea, from 2017-18. I was an assistant teacher in the kindergarten, which meant I did everything from getting the kids ready for swim class, playing with them between classes and, once my Korean got better, also helping them answer problems during class.”

"For most people I met in South Korea, I was the first Dane they'd ever even seen, so it was cool to share my own culture with them too. I made so many good friends from just being willing to be exposed to something different and in return exposing others to my own "different". That's why I wanted to be a volunteer.”
