Sustainable Gastronomy Day

ICYE-UK would like to join the United Nations in celebration of sustainable gastronomy day.

What is Gastronomy?

<<Gastronomy is

  • the study of the relationship between food and culture
  • the art of preparing and serving rich or delicate and appetising food,
  • the cooking styles of particular regions, and
  • the science of good eating.>>

According to Wikipedia, it is a lot of things 🙂

Why do we care about Gastronomy at ICYE-UK?

Eating together is an essential part of cohabitation in harmony, a very important time to exchange experiences, insights and bond. During the volunteering programmes that we host, training takes place during camps and mealtimes are a very important part of camps.

We need to nourish our bodies but, equally important, we need to practise our social and language skills, and even more important: foster a sense of belonging, respect and care for each other.

A great opportunity for this is, for example, when volunteers cook one of their traditional dishes for the rest of the camp participants.

What is Sustainability and why is it important?

Activities (e.g. agriculture, fishing or even preparation of food) can be done in a careless way, wasting our natural resources or it can be done in a way that can be continued into the future without being detrimental to our environment or health.

What is Sustainable Gastronomy?

Sustainable gastronomy is a cuisine that pays attention to <<where the ingredients are from, how the food is grown and how it gets to our markets and eventually to our plates>>.

The Five Principles of Sustainable Food and Agriculture

<<FAO has developed a common vision and an integrated approach to sustainability across agriculture, forestry and fisheries. This unified perspective – valid across all agricultural sectors and taking into account social, economic and environmental considerations – ensures the effectiveness of action on the ground and is underpinned by knowledge based on the best available science, and adaptation at community and country levels to ensure local relevance and applicability.>> Source: https://www.fao.org/sustainability/background/en/

Happy Sustainable Gastronomy Day!

ICYE-UK wishes you a nourishing and loving day, in harmony with the environment.

And to our volunteers currently in the UK, we look forward to eating with you during camp soon!
